Disclaimer: I can’t promise that this blog will always be about cakes/cupcakes/cookies! My other loves include food, travel, my animals and books, so they may well feature too.
Now that that’s out of the way, I can write a blog post that has nothing to do with cakes. As a small business owner, I know how important good reviews and word of mouth are, and I wanted to give a big ‘shout out’ to an amazing business that so deserves to do well. We are lucky enough to spend a lot of time in Cornwall, and there are lots of great places to eat there but one that stands out is The Canteen at Maker Heights. It’s hidden away in a rather inauspicious building (converted Nissen sheds), but the location is just beautiful, up on the hill overlooking Plymouth sound. Perfect for a stop off if you’re walking the coastal path………….or, just doing as we do and walking 15 minutes to get there with the dogs, thinking that gives you an excuse to eat lots!
‘The Canteen’ conjures up images of old fashioned mass catering, but this place is anything but. All their food is fresh, locally sourced where possible and always in season. Everything seems to be homemade including the bread, it’s all freshly cooked and they cater brilliantly for vegetarians or Coeliacs. The menu changes regularly, and it’s always tough deciding what to do go for that day. Various little touches add to the excellent food, such as blankets for those sitting outside, or the friendliness of the staff, and one thing that I really love is that their children’s menu is as far removed from the usual ‘fish fingers and chips’ as you will possibly find! My children have grown up eating whatever we eat, so they’re not ones for baked beans or chicken nuggets and I love the fact that they can eat what I would call normal food but just smaller portions. Their children’s sharing platter with homemade hummus amongst other things, was a big hit (although sadly not much sharing was done!).
The Canteen is just the kind of place I love to go to – it’s casual, relaxed and unpretentious, you can turn up in muddy wellies or a wetsuit and you’ll be welcomed just as warmly as anybody else, and the food is amazing. I can’t seem to find a website for The Canteen, but check out their Facebook page and TripAdvisor reviews to see lots who love it as much as I do. And if you’re visiting the Plymouth area, do go and try it out!
Happy baking and caking (and eating) everyone,
