Basic Baking Class

This class is aimed at complete beginners to baking and cake making, and by the end of the day you will be able to confidently create a range of popular baked items that you can adapt for your own celebrations.  If you have never made a cake before, or have made a cake but struggled to make it rise properly, taste delicious or look as it should, then this is the class for you.  We will go back to basics, including the science behind baking and learning what each ingredient does, and you will learn the essential skills of baking so that you can apply them to any cake or recipe. 

We have two options available for this class. If you book the April or June date, you will make a classic light and delicious vanilla sponge cake with American style buttercream, a lemon drizzle loaf cake, and fudgy chocolate brownies.

And if you book the September or November date, you will make a chocolate sponge cake with American style buttercream, a zesty lemon Swiss roll, and delicious classic scones as well. 

Please choose which bakes you would prefer to make, and choose your date below accordingly.

All equipment is provided, and we will be happy to help with any questions at all you may have about cake baking during the class. You will also have class notes which include each tried and tested cake recipe so that you can recreate your cakes at home.

  • Understand the fundamentals of baking and troubleshoot any problems

  • Understand your ingredients and how to prepare them

  • Bake perfect, level sponges for use in family bakes, birthday and other celebration cakes

  • Split and fill cakes

  • Adapt recipes to create your own flavours for your cakes

  • Create delicious fillings for your cakes

  • Bake teatime favourites that are always popular

  • Scale your recipes up and down to suit your occasion

  • Troubleshoot common problems such as domed cakes, cracked cakes, sunken cakes, burned edges, and overflowing tins

  • And more!
